A Look at North Carolina Government Retirement Plan Contributions

I've been getting calls and visits since the Governor's Budget was released yesterday. Governor Easley wants to eliminate the state's contribution to the state employees' retirement system. Mike Hawkins SEANC District 25 provides us with a shocking comparison view of the current contributions to the state retirement system (1.97% reducing to 0%), the judicial system (14.05%), and the General Assembly system (23.20%).

And they want to cut their contribution to 0% for next year

SEANC has been active in meeting with the press and General Assembly members about this and othere issues coming before this session of the General Assembly. You need to call and/or meet with your General Assembly Representative or Senator as soon as possible about this issue and other issues which concern you in this short session (deals with financial issues and adjustments to the budget). Here is where and how to contact your General Assembly leaders:

A SEANC Town Meeting is scheduled for the McKimmon Center on May 28

The State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC) will hold a Town Meeting for State Employees on Tuesday evening, May 28th at the McKimmon Center. SEANC Executive Director Dana Cope will update employees on legislative issues related to pay and benefits, hear employees' workplace concerns and promote the association's 2002 legislative agenda and rally. The meeting, to begin at 6:30 p.m., will include a question and answer session. Expected topics of discussion are the State's budget crisis, the rising cost of health care, shrinking employer retirement contributions and
collective bargaining. Elected association officers will also be in attendance, including SEANC President Shirley Bell, First Vice President Steve Lusk, Second Vice President Cliff Brown and Treasurer Mark Dearmon. All state employees and their families are encouraged to attend.

Program:

The program will center around key issues facing state employees (pay, health care and retirement), and areas within the budget that legislative leaders might look at for cuts instead of once again balancing the budget on our backs. The citizens of our state pay taxes for various services we provide, not to provide tax breaks for big business and politically connected patrons.

Bring your children:

One of the advantages of the later date for this year's rally is that our children will be out of school. Bring your children with you to the rally this year. Let's make sure that citizens and legislators know that state employees are working families.
Last year an estimated 5,000 state employees rallied at the Legislature May 16. They were there to express concern over salary increases averaging little more than 3 percent per year for the past 10 years, soaring costs of health care, and a decline of their retirement system. The SEANC-sponsored rally gives state employees an opportunity to talk to their legislators
about legislative issues and "make their voices heard."
